A landscape of 41 communities
The municipality is organised into Lower Dropull, Upper Dropull and Pogon. The Drino valley connects many settlements, while others lie on surrounding slopes and mountain routes. Place names often appear in Greek, Albanian and Latin-script variants. Recording those variants helps researchers understand when different records refer to the same village.
Faith, architecture and community memory
Orthodox churches, chapels, cemeteries and feast days are important points of memory in many villages. Each monument should be described from evidence rather than broadly labelled as ancient or Byzantine. Family photographs, inscriptions, school records and oral testimony can add detail when their provenance and reuse rights are recorded.
Heritage is also expressed through language, food, religious observance, summer gatherings, village festivals and forms of polyphonic singing found across southern Albania and Epirus. Migration has changed village life, yet return visits and community projects continue to connect descendants with ancestral places.
Dropull and nearby Gjirokastër
The UNESCO-listed historic centre of Gjirokastër is an internationally recognised gateway to the wider Drino valley. Responsible visits beyond the city should respect worship, private homes, cemeteries and local photography preferences.
Dropolis attributes historical claims to identifiable sources where possible, labels oral testimony as testimony, and distinguishes historical interpretations from established administrative facts.
