Hundreds of thousands of people with roots in the 41 villages of Dropull (Δρόπολη) now live outside Albania — most in Greece, but also across Europe, North America, and Australia. Despite the distance, ties to the villages remain strong. Emigration from Dropull happened in three main waves: before World War II toward Greece and the United States, the largest wave after the fall of Albanian communism in 1990–1991, and an ongoing wave driven by economic factors and family ties abroad. The largest diaspora community lives in Greece, concentrated in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Ioannina.
Established communities also exist in the United States (New York, Boston, Chicago), Germany (Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart), Australia (Melbourne, Sydney), and Canada (Toronto, Montreal). Every summer — especially around 15 August (Dormition of the Virgin) — diaspora members return for panegyria, family gatherings, and religious ceremonies. Village churches are maintained by diaspora contributions, and many families have restored ancestral homes as summer residences.
